This summer, Ana Sofia L. ‘26 was selected by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis, hosted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). During the summit, participants discussed and strategized relevant issues affecting today’s students in education-based athletics and performing arts. They also gained a deeper understanding of positive leadership and how to develop and maintain healthy relationships within their school communities. Read more about Ana Sofia’s experience below.

Ana Sofia L. '26 Attends National Leadership Summit
Written by Ana Sofia Laszewski, edited for length and clarity by Advancement

This summer, I was selected by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis hosted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). It was one of the most transformative experiences of my life, and I was honored to have been one of four people selected from the state of Florida. Over 200 students attended from almost every state in the country, along with participants from Honduras and Canada. This experience taught me so much about myself, others, and how to step up and be a leader. From hearing inspiring speakers to volunteering with Unified Athletes, this summit exemplified what a true servant leader is.

Attending the leadership summit gave me the chance to meet some truly amazing people, and I’m deeply grateful to now call them friends. One of the greatest lessons I learned from them was the importance of perspective. While I was struggling to find my place, they showed me what it means to have one. They helped reshape my sense of purpose by showing me how much bigger the world is beyond where I’m from. I learned about their way of life, how school and sports operate, and how they bring leadership into their daily lives. While the summit focused on leadership, it unexpectedly taught me a lot about kindness as well. Making friends, sharing ideas, and creating memories together changed my perspective on life, along with the future goals and actions I want to pursue.

I learned an immense amount of new leadership tactics and skills to implement at Chaminade-Madonna, both on and off the field. Through every activity and speaker, there was an opportunity to learn and better myself. Not all leaders are speakers, and sometimes the best leaders are listeners. Not only did my perspective change, but I feel my maturity level grew as well. They provided us with real-life scenarios where we had to respond like young adults. They pushed us to think critically with an emphasis on empathetic thinking, and what it means to be a servant leader.

My favorite event that we attended was hosted at a local high school, where we learned about the Unified Sports program. This program brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same teams to promote inclusion. After learning about the program, we got to spend the day playing various sports and games with Unified Athletes. For them, it may have been just a day of playing sports, but for me, it was an experience that filled my heart with joy and left a lasting impact.

While I was nervous about taking a four-day trip to Indianapolis, I am grateful that God nudged my heart to go. The entire trip was an incredible blessing, and I am thankful to the FHSAA for everything they’ve helped me accomplish. Above all, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and be part of something bigger than myself. I hope to make a difference in my community the same way that every person there made a difference in me.

Club Rush

On September 10, Chaminade-Madonna students had the opportunity to attend Club Rush! This annual event gave our Lions the chance to explore the wide variety of clubs and honor societies on campus, connect with moderators and student officers, and discover ways to get involved. From academics to the arts, there is something for every student to pursue their passions and grow beyond the classroom.

National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to Jason S. ‘26 on being named a Semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. Over 1.3 million students in about 20,000 high schools entered the program by taking the PSAT. Jason now has the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Finalists will be announced in February. Join us in wishing Jason the best of luck as he continues in this process!

Hollywood Youth Ambassadors

Congratulations to Juliette B. ‘27, Gerard B. ‘27 (2nd year), Arianna C. ‘28, Isabella C. ‘28, Veronika K. ‘28, Lorenzo M. ‘26, Valerie R. ‘28, Renata T. ‘26, and Giuliana W. ‘26 on being accepted into the 2025-2026 Hollywood Youth Ambassador Program. The Hollywood Youth Ambassador Program is open to students who live in the City of Hollywood and attend any high school within city limits. Youth Ambassadors work closely with the Hollywood Mayor, City Commissioners, the City Manager’s Office, Hollywood Police Department, and other city departments to gain insight into local government operations. Through the program, ambassadors learn about the importance of civic engagement, active citizenship, and community involvement. Students will serve as liaisons, discussing youth-related issues that impact the community and its schools while also learning about their local municipal government. The group represents the City of Hollywood at events such as Broward Days in Tallahassee during the State Legislative session.

Business Law Class Guest Speaker

On Friday, September 5, local attorney Zachary Griffin, Managing Partner at GTX Legal, visited students in Mr. Michaelson's Business Law class, a new dual-enrollment course offered at CMCP that expands students' knowledge of the business world and cultivates entrepreneurship. During his visit, Mr. Griffin fielded business pitches from students, exploring diverse topics ranging from securing startup capital, product development, business structure, partnerships, and how to avoid the pitfalls many new entrepreneurs face when taking their ideas from the brainstorming stage to market. Mr. Griffin's visit marks the beginning of a series of opportunities for students to connect with legal and business professionals who can help shape their entrepreneurial journey.

Biology Lab

Students in Ms. Foley's Honors and General Biology class participated in a pineapple enzyme lab. Students studied the effects of the enzyme Bromelain on protein and how denaturing affects enzymatic reactions, by adding fresh and canned pineapple to liquid gelatin.
