Lions Attend Florida League of Cities Youth Council Legislative Days

As part of the Hollywood Youth Ambassador Program, I had the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee, Florida, with Gerard Brown ‘27, Arianna Castro ‘28, Isabella Cherry ‘28, Veronika Kuraeva ‘28, Lorenzo Munoz ‘26, Valerie Rosa ‘28, and Renata Tatick ‘26 to attend the Florida League of Cities Youth Council Legislative Days from January 27–28. This trip allowed us to learn more about how our state government works, meet with leaders, and gain a better understanding of the legislative process.
Traveling to Tallahassee with seven other students was an unforgettable and inspiring experience. The trip was not only educational but also empowering, as it gave us the opportunity to see leadership and public service in action. Being there together made the experience even more meaningful, as we were able to learn and grow alongside one another.
One of the most impactful parts of the trip was attending a presentation on leadership development. The speakers challenged us to think about what it truly means to be an effective leader, emphasizing communication, accountability, and service to others. We learned that leadership is not just about holding a title but about setting an example and inspiring positive change. The session encouraged us to reflect on our own strengths and areas for growth, leaving us motivated to apply these lessons in our schools and communities.
Another highlight of our visit was the opportunity to meet and interact with elected officials such as State Representatives Marie Woodson and Hillary Cassel, and State Senators Barbara Sharief and Jason Pizzo. Speaking directly with individuals who serve in public office gave us valuable insight into the responsibilities and challenges of leadership at the state level. They shared their personal journeys, offered advice about civic engagement, and answered our questions thoughtfully. These conversations made the government feel more accessible and reminded us that our voices and involvement truly matter.
Touring both the old and new Capitol buildings, with their restored chambers and museum exhibits, allowed us to better understand Florida's political history. The new Capitol building showcased the modern side of government with its beautiful structure and active offices. Being in the spaces where important decisions are made gave us a deeper appreciation for the process and the importance of civic participation.
Overall, our trip to Tallahassee was a powerful learning experience that strengthened our understanding of leadership and government. It allowed us to connect classroom knowledge to real-world experiences and inspired us to become more active and informed citizens. Sharing this journey with fellow Lions made it even more special. From working together to tackle a local community need at the youth conference to having in-depth and engaging conversations with elected officials, this experience taught us how to be even more impactful leaders and equipped us with the tools and resources to succeed in our future endeavors. The lessons we learned in Tallahassee will stay with us and continue to shape us as future leaders in our community.

Chris Hixon Memorial Run/Walk
Join us for the annual Chris Hixon Memorial 5K on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Broward County middle and high schools are encouraged to rally their school communities to take part in this meaningful event.
The middle or high school with the highest participation will be awarded $1,000 to support their school athletic program, making this a wonderful opportunity to support both a great cause and our own student-athletes.
This 5K honors the life and legacy of Chris Hixon, Athletic Director at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who was tragically killed on February 14, 2018. In his memory, the Chris Hixon Foundation established a scholarship fund to support graduating student-athletes across Broward County, continuing his commitment to education, athletics, and service.
A team has already been created for our school. When registering, select our school’s team to ensure our participation is counted. Both in-person and virtual options are available.
