Turkey Time!
We love these turkeys! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch today on campus. The next one is on Tuesday! 
Are you sleeping? 
“Let’s talk about sleep deprivation and high school students,” Nurse Carrera writes on her first slide. She’s back in Dr. Crenshaw's Psychology class, but instead of discussing a hyperactive amygdala or stress control, she’s talking about sleep. 

How many hours of sleep do you think the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends for teens aged 13-18 years old? Are you surprised to learn it’s 8-10 hours? Better question: Do you hit that mark?
Nurse Carrera and Dr. Crenshaw started class by asking each student how many hours of sleep they received the night before, and the answers may surprise you. Students responded with the expected 6-8, but there were some 5s, some 3s, and even some 2s. What’s keeping these students from sleeping? They answer video games, stress, studying/homework procrastination, and scrolling through their phone. 

Let’s just say, Dr. Crenshaw and Nurse Carrera quickly moved into discussing why some of these answers should be concerning. Did you know there’s a physical cost of missing sleep? In a 2013 study conducted by Carol Maher and her research team in Australia, they examined sleep habits of students aged 9-16, caloric intake, and body mass index (BMI). Their findings (supported by other studies as well) showed that the students who got the least sleep had higher BMIs, while those that slept the most had the lowest BMI. There are hormones involved in the sleep process that Nurse Carrera detailed, but the short of it is this: when you’re up late studying, do you crave carrots and kale and healthy snacks? If you do, we should meet because I’d like to learn your ways. Do you instead crave sugar and salt and Sour Patch Kids? There’s a science behind these cravings! Sleep deprivation increases cortisol levels and cortisol stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, insulin release, and maintenance of blood sugar levels. 

So this lack of sleep and its relationship with a high BMI/ weight gain is strong. We know that being overweight or even obese can cause numerous health problems and put us at more rick of allergies, high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and the list goes on. 

You’re probably asking yourself, well, what can I do? How can I study for my tests, get the best grades, keep up with my social media/ gaming interests, and get the ideal amount of sleep? 

Luckily for us, a group of researchers from UCLA and Arizona State University conducted an experiment involving 421 students in 2017 to answer a similar question. During a 2-week time frame, the students filled out diary checklists indicating how much sleep they got and how they felt generally. At the end of the school year, the researchers accessed their grades and standardized test scores to determine each student’s GPA. One year later, they repeated the study and found 1. the students with the best GPAs slept for 7.5 hours/night and 2. The students felt the best (had less stress and more energy) when they averaged 8.75 hours/night. 

We want your brains to be healthy and refreshed so you can retain the information you are here to learn! “So while you’re in class, be in class! Participate, raise your hand,” enthuses Nurse Carrera, “You can’t focus if you’re exhausted. And I’ll leave you with this Irish Proverb: A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.”
