CMCP CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

During the month of February, CMCP has been celebrating Black History Month. This month, and all year long, our community celebrates Black Americans and our Marianist pillars of service, justice, and peace.

Students have been deepening their education of Black history, including in Ms. Duncan’s Honors Econ class which researched Black history leaders. Students then learned how the leaders applied the cardinal values or social justice to their lives.

Outside of the classroom, our community continues to think critically. This week, the Diversity Club sponsored an event for students, faculty, and staff. A large banner was created with the question, “How will I promote racial justice?” Everyone was encouraged to ponder about how they can be actively involved and then write their commitments publicly.

Olivia V. ‘22, is the president of the Diversity Club and helped organize the event. “We chose to do this activity for Black History Month because we want to spread awareness and educate about racial justice issues and Black Lives Matter. We want everyone to know that we care and support our Black peers and their communities,” she said.

In honor and support, CMCP and Campus Ministry will continue to highlight Black Americans on social media platforms. Director of Campus Ministry, Brian Reavey said, “As we celebrate, we pray in thanksgiving for the many gifts and talents shared by Black Americans. We pray that all of us may embody Catholic Social Teaching by treating everyone with dignity and promoting racial justice and equality for all people.” Please follow @cmlions and @cmcpministry on Instagram for more.

As a community, we are thankful to be able to come together during this important time. As senior, Dorvangie T. said, “With everything going on, we want everyone to experience a culture of love, acceptance, and inclusivity. Nobody is left out.”
