Imagine that you are standing in a circle. In this circle, you are safe. You are loved. You are secure in God’s hands. Here in this circle, this God circle, you are home.

This is the opening of the interactive prayer Mr. Mari, Director of Campus Ministry, shared with each class during orientation week. In this prayer, Mr. Mari asked each student to confront their feelings of fear, anxiety, and anger that have been taking up precious space in their minds and bodies. Students are asked to gather up these feelings and lift them up to be blessed as holy because, as Mr. Mari says, “we are not bottling up these feelings; instead, we accept that we are feeling fearful, anxious, and angry. We remind ourselves that these are normal, human feelings that we have to process, and if we don’t stop and think and process them correctly, they can really affect the way we go forward.”

Once the students bless these feelings as holy, they let these feelings go. They take a step back into the God circle and remember “these feelings might represent how they’ve been or they are now, but this feeling of security in the God circle is where they can aspire to be.”

This relaxing, repetitive prayer that encourages movement builds on the mindfulness and meditation practice the students also participated in during orientation week. Ms. Strait led groups of students in a mindfulness exercise with the hope that these breathing exercises, stretches, and mindful thinking techniques would be useful to practice in the new school year. As Ms. Strait says, “The world is definitely a challenging place at the moment. Incorporating mindfulness and meditation can help us respond more thoughtfully, promote our own positive well-being (and that of others), and react authentically.”

Wellness Center Update

To reduce the spread of coronavirus in our community, we must practice consistent and correct mask wearing, handwashing, and social distancing behaviors.

Correct Mask Wearing
To truly provide a protective barrier, masks must fit snugly over both the mouth and nose. Try this DIY Candle Test to evaluate the effectiveness of your mask.
