Meet the new Athletic Director, Mr. Matt Bishop
“I’m no interior designer,” he starts, but when you find him in his office in Belanger Hall, you’ll see he already has some important pieces on the walls. Under the CM Lions poster are framed photos of his family, inspirational quotes, and a desk that looks lived in for more than the four weeks he’s been on staff. Indicative of the new year, one wall has what looks like a huge calendar, empty in anticipation for the first games to be announced and scheduled.
After 7 years as teacher, football coach, and Assistant Athletic Director at Archbishop McCarthy High School, Mr. Bishop is ready to dive in to his Athletic Director role here at CMCP.
In this role, Mr. Bishop will oversee the Athletic Department and work with coaches on making sure students are well-prepared for the games and those games are ready to be played. All the “behind the scenes stuff no fan is really thinking about when they’re at the game,” that’s Mr. Bishop’s job, and he’s ready to get the ball rolling (pun, of course, intended).
Mr. Bishop joins CMCP during a challenging time for students, athletics, and their overlap in education. Operating under COVID-19 presents many unknowns, and Mr. Bishop is well aware of this fact. When asked about CMCP’s upcoming athletic year and COVID-19, he thinks there is a bigger lesson here: “Patience is a virtue. Let God make the decisions. We are not in control of the situation. All we can do is respond, and respond positively.”
Looking ahead, Mr. Bishop wants CMCP’s athletic department to serve as a model of what’s possible. He says, “You can win the right way. You can graduate student athletes and send them to Ivy League schools. I want people to look at Chaminade-Madonna as the example on what to do.”
And in the short term? “These kids are out here busting their butts. I want to get them on the field safely and keep them healthy.”
Welcome to the CMCP team, Mr. Bishop!
