CM's summer reading assignment is The Shack, by William P. Young.
The Shack was chosen as the summer reading book for several reasons. First, this novel is an important work that hopefully students will find meaningful. One of the goals of the summer reading program is to encourage students to become lifelong readers. Second, the subject matter of this book lends itself to an interdisciplinary learning. The prospect of involving the entire school in the discussion of a literary work is exciting. Third, another goal of the summer reading program is to connect the summer reading book to the Characteristic of Marianist Education (CME)emphasized during the year. The featured CME for the 2009-2010 school year is Formation in Faith, to which The Shack is well suited. Finally, The Shack is a book that the whole family may find worthwhile.
The Shack is available for purchase at the C-M bookstore as well as other local bookstores and via internet.
